Volkswagen considers joining formula one in seven years, said the head of the racing car manufacturer Wolfgang Duerheimer.
"I imagine participation in formula one in 2018, when the company is at the forefront of the industry," said Duerheimer Auto motor und Sport magazine.
"We have sufficient marks that could do it."
The automaker said last year that formula one would need more stability and a better image as the company considers joining the sport.
It came after Volkswagen revealed in 2009 that it was evaluating the potential benefits of the F1 when introducing new engine regulations since the beginning of 2014.
Formation of Volkswagen's brands include Audi, Lamborghini, Porsche, Skoda, Bugatti and seat.
